Why Counselling or Psychotherapy?

People think about counselling/psychotherapy for all sorts of reasons:
  • struggling with anxiety or depression
  • feeling overwhelmed or stressed about work, study or life in general
  • feeling lonely or hurt
  • being bullied or harassed
  • worried about your own anger or violence
  • relationship and family issues
  • worries about sex or sexuality
  • concerns about your eating and drinking
  • body issues
  • peri-menopause, menopause and post -menopause
  • grief, loss and bereavement
  • a search for meaning and the purpose of life
  • fear of ageing, illness and your own death
  • feeling suicidal, despairing and hopeless

These feelings may be a response to something that has happened and be unfamiliar or frightening, counselling can support us in a crisis and through distressing and difficult times. In a safe environment feelings can be expressed and explored with kindness and compassion. Trauma can be explored sensitively and psychological wounds can be soothed.

We might have been holding down feelings for a long time but they keeping reappearing. Psychotherapy can bring unconscious thoughts into awareness as we discover negative patterns that keep repeating in our lives.

We can begin to understand the meanings we have given to life events and look at the limits we have imposed on ourselves, therapist and client can work together to find more freedom and acceptance.

Couple Counselling and Psychotherapy
As a couple you may be questioning your  relationship:

  • How have we drifted apart?
  • Why do I feel disappointed or uninterested in sex?
  • Why do we fight all the time?
  • How can we recover from an affair?
  • Do we want children?
  • Can we create a better relationship and move to a deeper connection?
  • Would we be better if we split up?

How do I work?
I meet each new person and couple as individuals and we create our own particular approach to what you bring. This can be short-term counselling focussed on a crisis or specific issues or  psychotherapy that involves a deeper and longer-term exploration. You might begin with a urgent concern and then decide you want to explore more fundamental questions.

I offer an initial consultation so you can meet me face-to-face; to see if I feel right for you and ask any questions before committing to therapy. This is a one-off session with no obligation to continue. should we decide to work together, we would meet weekly on the same day at the same time. This helps us build and maintain a safe and secure relationship. Of course life intervenes and I do my best to accommodate a change of day or time when necessary.

During the COVID pandemic I am following guidelines to protect clients and myself and I am also working online using Zoom.
